The Brooklyn Americans were a New York based ice hockey franchise that were formerly called the New York Americans, known as the Amerks. They were the third expansion team of the National Hockey League. They were the first team in New York City. The team's name was changed to the Brooklyn American for the 1941–42 season when the team had every intention of moving to Brooklyn from Madison Square Garden. Financial troubles had beset the team and the effect of the war saw team cease playing. In 1946 the NHL cancelled the franchise. Although the Brooklyn Americans never go to play in Brooklyn (they did practice there) the New York Islanders moved to Brooklyn in 2015. |
